4. Major Events of the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival

 

(1). Three Awards and Two Award Giving Ceremonies

 

a. The French Hachette Filipacchi Medias, a world famous publishing giant, has formally joined the festival as it announced its sponsorship for the Elle (China) Fashion Photography Award this year. The prize is comprised of a gold, a silver and a bronze; the award ceremony will be held at 7:30 pm on September 21 in the courtyard of the Old Magistrate’s Office.

 

b. Shanxi Mobile Communication Co. Ltd., as a corporate sponsor of the 2004 PIP festival, will launch “China Mobile Cup Best Photographers Prize”, which consists of one gold worth 100,000 yuan; one silver of 50,000 yuan; and one bronze of 20,000. The prize-awarding ceremony will be presented at 7:30 pm on September 19 at the courtyard of the Old Magistrate’s Office.

 

c. Hong Kong Phoenix TV will sponsor the “Hong Kong Phoenix TV Best Book of Contemporary Chinese Photography Prize”, which contains one gold prized at 50,000 yuan; one silver at 30,000 yuan; and one bronze at 10,000. The official ceremony will take place at the courtyard of the Old Magistrate’s Office at 7:30 September 19.

 

(2). Slides Show

 

a. Lecture on works of the world famous photographer Ansel Admas, directed and given by Alan Ross, translated by Huang Wen

 

b. “The Photographic Art of Rene Burry”, given by the famous French photographer Rene Burry himself, translation by Zeng Nian

 

c. A Select Collection of Works by Chinese Photographers

 

(3). Photography Workshops

 

a. Advance Photography Workshop

 

b. A monographic lecture on the work of Noel Quidu, a well-respected battlefield photojournalist, interpreted by Zeng Nian

 

c. “Curators College” Seminars presided over by domestic and foreign curators

 

d. Photography Education Forum

 

e. photo editing workshop by Etienne Collomb, a noted photo editor with Gamma

 

(4) Review and Evaluation by Master

 

Alain Mingam, a master of photography, will review and evaluate the portfolios of 25 promising photographers selected nationwide, who will be able to have a chance of a face-to-face interaction with this master (further details will be provided later on).

 

Alain Mingam, a renowned photographer, was born in 1946 in France. Former head of the jury of the World Press Photo contest, he has served as photojournalist for Gamma; art director for photography exhibitions in Louvre Museum; photo editor for Le Figaro, France Soir, Jonas; and jury member of Kodak and Kodak Fund.

 

(5). China Photography Museum

 

The unveiling of China Photography Museum last year was considered a joyful event in the history of Chinese photography. This year we will improve its institutional building and set up rules and regulations so as to bring it in line with the international practice.

 

a. The statue of Ansel Adams will be erected and a collection of his 30 photographs will be displayed at the same time.

 

b. The statue of Jiang Qisheng, a pioneer in Chinese photojournalism, will be set up, along with the displaying of his work and highlights of his storied career.

 

(6). Photo Trading Center

 

Based on the experiences of the past three years, the Organizing Committee has decided to set up the Trading Center of the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival so that trade transactions can be conducted in an ordered, organized and planned way.

 

(7). PIP Research Center

 

To boost photography and ensure the smooth development of Pingyao International Photography Festival, the PIP Research Center was set up last July at the Department of Cultural Studies and Communication of Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. A great number of photographers and critics devoted the PIP has pitched in wholeheartedly; the ribbon cutting ceremony was held in July at the university.

 

(8). A Supplement Issue of “PHOTO”, a French Magazine

 

PHOTO, an authoritative and influential photography magazine in the world, will issue a supplement in September to cover the 2004 Pingyao International Photography Festival; the supplement will be distributed worldwide.

 

(9). Nationwide Traveling Exhibitions

 

After the curtain is rolled down for the festival, the Art Committee will cull 100 to 150 frames of pictures by noted photographers to be immediately put on tour to Beijing and Shanghai. The shortlisted work of Elle Fashion Photography Contest and Elle Fashion Photography Show will also be shown in Shanghai.

 

(10). Photographing Trips

 

The tentative routes include:

 

a. Northern Route, with a focus on Buddhist Culture: the Yungang Grottoes of Datong; the Hanging Temple in Hunyuan, Wutai Mountains and Wooden Pagoda in Yinxian

 

b. Central Route, which brings together the Culture of Shanxi Merchants: the Courtyard of the Wang Family; Mianshan Mountains; the Courtyard of Qiao Family and the Mansion House of Chang Family

 

c. Southern Route, concentrated on Roots Seeking Events: the Hukou Waterfall; Guandi Temple; Stork Tower; Yao Temple; the Big Scholar Tree; Dingcun Village and Taosi Culture

 

d. Southeastern Route, featuring Shangdang Scenery: Wangmang Mesa; the Great Ravine of the Taihang; Former Residence of Premier; Floating at Lucheng

 

(11). Image Industry Exposition

 

The theme of Image Industry Exposition of the Pingyao International Photography Festival is the industrialization of commercial photography; the expo is an extension of the commercial market of the PIP.
